This practice follows the SPJ Code of Ethics. Its four principles, and what each means here.
Minimize harm
Reporting on language and human rights means working with people who may be at risk from being named. Subjects are told how their words will be used before they speak.
Be accountable and transparent
Corrections are made promptly and marked on the piece. Questions about accuracy get an answer.
Act Independently
Consultancy clients are never subjects of the reporting. Gifts and free access are declined where they could create an obligation.
Seek truth and report it
Claims verified before publication, sources identified where it is safe to do so, and historical material carrying a citation the reader can follow.
Imagery
Every photograph, illustration and visual piece in the reporting is made by Rebecca Newman, or drawn from open community and historical archives with the source named. No image here is AI-generated.
AI disclosure
AI assists research in specified pieces. All information is verified by a human and it does not write the reporting or make the pictures.
Corrections
Send the piece, the line, and what is wrong. Corrections are published on the piece with the date and what changed. Nothing is removed silently.
